The fortress is situated at the summit of Palamidi Hill, and enjoys a panoramic view of the city and other fortifications of Nafplion, including the Bourtzi and Acronauplia. It was built between 1711 and 1715 by the Venetian Provveditore (district governor) Agostino Sagredo. It consisted of a complec of bastions with water reservoirs, storerooms for ammunition and food and frequently, moats, murder-holes, outworks and barracks.
