In the hinterland of Epidauros were the two most important healing centers in the entire Greek and Roman world: the sanctuary dedicated to Apollo Maleatas, a god with healing properties, which was founded around 800 BC, and the Asclepieion, the seat of antiquity ‘s physician god whose worship was established in the 6th c. BC. The most important monuments belong to the 4th and 3rd c. BC: in the sanctuary in the plain are the temple of Asclepius, the Abaton, the tholos and the theater, the restaurant, the Katagogion or hostel, and the stadium; in the mountain sanctuary are the Classical temple and altar of Apollo, the large stoa, the priests’ residence, and the precinct of the Muses.
